The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

A 1920 silent horror film directed by Robert Wien. The film became the most important example of German Expressionist cinema and was a major influence on film noir and other horror films. The screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer created the typical atmosphere of the film, focusing on the inmates of mental institutions, the confusion among the fairground attractions and the mysterious murders. The expressionist group Der Sturm contributed to the film's visual design, and the basis is the distorted backdrops of the buildings with hand-painted shadows and the distinctive camouflage of the actors.
