The Deadly Invention
In 1958, the film went around the world, won awards and became one of the most important films of the 20th century. Among other awards, it won the Grand Prix at the EXPO 58 World Exhibition in Brussels. It is the first film by Karel Zeman based on Jules Verne. Here, the author tried a new artistic style, bringing to life in black and white the engravings of the first illustrators of Verne's books, Édouard Riou and Léon Benet. He developed this style throughout his life and applied his visionary vision to it. Verne's timeless tale of a misused inventor whose work threatens the whole world at the hands of criminals, the paper backdrops and the distinctive stylization all contribute to the work's unique visuals and unrepeatable atmosphere.
